About upband.ai
upband.ai is an independent practice tool for IELTS Academic Writing. It started as a personal project by someone preparing for IELTS who wanted honest, detailed feedback on every practice essay, not just a number.
How scores are estimated
Each answer is measured against the public IELTS Writing band descriptors (May 2023 version). An AI model lists facts about the writing: each sentence, each error, whether the question is fully answered, whether a Task 1 report has an overview. Written rules then turn those facts into a band for each criterion. The rules were checked against sample essays published with examiner bands and comments.
What it can and cannot do
- It can show your likely band range and exactly which errors and habits hold you back.
- It cannot give an official score. Real examiners also use confidential training material that is not public, so any tool can only approximate them.
- Read a score as roughly ±0.5 band, and judge your level from the average of several timed essays.
