Who we are
upband.ai is run by an individual based in the United Kingdom ("we", "us"), who is the data controller for the personal data described here. Contact: hello@upband.ai.
What we collect
- Account details: your email address and a password. The password is stored only as a one-way hash; we cannot read it.
- What you submit: questions, essays, chart images, the minutes taken (optional), and the scores and feedback generated for them.
- Real test results you choose to enter, such as a test date and a Writing band.
- Security data: a hashed (non-reversible) form of your IP address when you sign up, kept for 30 days to stop mass account creation; and standard server logs kept by our hosting provider.
Please don't include other people's personal information in your essays.
Why we use it, and our legal basis
- To provide the service you signed up for: scoring, feedback and history (contract).
- To keep the service secure and prevent abuse (legitimate interests).
- To check and improve the accuracy of estimates by comparing them, in aggregate, with real results that users choose to share (legitimate interests; entering a real result is optional).
We do not sell your data, show ads, or use tracking or analytics cookies.
Who processes your data for us
- Render (hosting and database). Servers may be located outside the UK.
- Anthropic (the AI model that measures your writing). Essays and chart images are sent to Anthropic's API to generate feedback.
Where data is transferred outside the UK, we rely on these providers' safeguards for international transfers, such as standard contractual clauses.
Cookies
We use one strictly necessary cookie that keeps you logged in. It contains no tracking information, and no consent banner is needed for it. We use no other cookies.
How long we keep data
Your account, essays and results are kept until you delete your account. Hashed sign-up IP addresses are deleted after 30 days.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can access, correct, delete or download your data, and object to or restrict some uses. You can download or delete everything yourself from your Account page; deletion is immediate and permanent. For anything else, email hello@upband.ai. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Age
upband.ai is for people aged 16 and over.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update the date above and, for significant changes, tell signed-in users.
