IELTS Writing Task 1: Process diagram
How to recognise it
Stages of how something is made or how something works (natural or manufactured).
The overview
Say how many stages there are, where the process starts and ends, and whether it is linear or a cycle. No numbers needed.
Plan (20 minutes)
| Paragraph | What to write |
|---|---|
| Introduction (1 sentence) | Paraphrase what the process produces or shows. |
| Overview (1-2 sentences) | Number of stages, start and end point, linear or cyclical. |
| Body 1 | The first half of the stages, in order. |
| Body 2 | The remaining stages up to the end product. |
Think before you write
- What does the visual show, in what units, and over what time or in what places?
- Find the 2-3 key features (biggest, smallest, main trend, biggest change, exception).
- Write the overview sentence first in your head; it decides how you group the body paragraphs.
- Choose only the figures that support those features. Don't describe everything.
Useful language
- First, …
- Following this, …
- Once …, …
- In the final stage, …
- … is collected and …
- … is then heated to…
- … are transported to…
- … evaporates and rises…
- … grows into…
- … falls as rain…
- …, after which…
- …, before being…
- …, where it is…
Mistakes that cost bands
- Skipping stages.
- No overview of the whole process.
- Using active voice for a manufacturing process (the passive is more natural there).
